Katelyn Alain’s Paintings

Fabulous:

“My work portrays an environment where very abstract ideas are tweaked to become human, and human emotions are abstracted into painterly process. These works articulate and crystallize abstract, subconscious ideas into individual portraits through the intuitive process of oil painting so they can then be more thoroughly examined in the guise of the human form. Each portrait is an iteration of myself, as each one is born from a particular place in the depths of my psyche.”

Making the old new again

My husband and I are now on a serious quest to figure out what we want to do with our kitchen. We want to keep with the true 50′s style of our house so we have decided to refurbish our old kitchen cabinets rather than tearing them out and starting over. The floors have to go, and although we would LOVE to bring back a funky 50′s linoleum to really dress things up, I think we are going to have to go with some form of tile for resale value. We’ve decided on white solid surface countertops with flecks of different colors that resembles counter tops found in old 50′s diners. We are also thinking of using subway tile for the backsplash in bright blues and greens that match the colored flecks in the counter top.

But I digress as usual… my research has led me to many designers who have found a way to make old things look new again. I’ve been checking out retrorenovation.com a lot lately and came across some amazing interior design ideas by Jonathan Adler (www.jonathanadler.com). He has some fantastic designs using items from the past in very inventive ways. I personally would love to have the barbie mirror! I might have to dig up that old trunk of barbies at my mom’s house and make something myself :)

Siren Handbags

Today my sister told me about this designer, Stephanie Lavoie, and I just love her style. She resides in California and has a fantastic little collection. I’m dying to have one of these as my Christmas present!
